Nominated for the Nestroy Prize

The play Verbranntes Land (Salty Irina) by Eve Leigh has been nominated for the Austrian Nestroy Prize 2025 in the category Best Play. The play had its German-language premiere on March 15, 2025, at the Vienna Schauspielhaus, directed by Tobias Herzberg, in my translation.

Eve Leigh, born in New York in 1984, writes plays and texts for performances and installations and is part of the artist group Coney, which develops interactive theater games. In 2017, she was resident writer at the Greek National Theater in Athens. Her dance theater piece While You Are Here (Dance East 7 The Place, London) and the commissioned work The Trick (Bush Theatre, London) premiered in 2019. Also in 2019, she received the Jerwood/Royal Court New Playwright Award. Commissioned works for the Bush Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Sheffield Theatre are in preparation. FLÄCHENBRAND (WILDFIRE ROAD) by Eve Leigh

After the German translation of Eve Leigh’s MIDNIGHT MOVIE was presented as a staged reading by Verena Regensburger at the Stückemarkt of the Theatertreffen 2021, the Rowohlt Theaterverlag commissioned the translation of Leigh’s text WILDFIRE ROAD. We just delivered this under the title FLÄCHENBRAND. The German premiere is scheduled for September 2022.

MIDNIGHT MOVIE

by Eve Leigh

Banner of the world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre, London.

A lonely voice sleepless in front of the Internet, at night. New tab – a man in the bathtub. New tab – a young woman inside a watertank. New tab – a girl on the tracks.

Eve Leigh’s dream – or nightmare – about the solitude of pain, about digital bodies as (questionable) freedom from one’s own limited body, about handicaps, accessibility, force and personal freedom, premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in November/December 2019.

Commissioned by Rowohl Theater Verlag, Bochert Translations translates this fascinating text by the British-American playwright into German.
